student loan forgiveness

As a presidential candidate, Joe Biden promised to cancel $10,000 of student loan debt per borrower. More than 11 months into his administration and that promise has not yet been fulfilled.

While Biden was on the campaign trail he said, “I’m going to make sure everyone in this generation gets $10,000 knocked off their student debt.”

Biden’s decision not to grant another extension of the pause despite calls from some Democrats for him has drawn criticism. The repayment moratorium began in September 2020, and federal student loan payments are set to restart in February 2022.

A  tweet from Yvette Simpson said, “Black people saved democracy, put Biden in the WH & delivered the Senate. Student loan debt is one of the most significant contributors to the racial wealth gap. He doesn’t need Congress to do this. So he has ZERO excuses. This is indefensible & WILL hurt us in 2022 and 2024.”

Rep. Rashida Tlaib makes $174K per year and she’s asking the American taxpayer to pay off her student debt too!

“I worked full time, Monday through Friday, and took weekend classes to get my law degree. And still, close to $200,000 in debt. And I still owe over $70,000 and most of it was interest,” Rep. Rashida Tlaib said.

If the Democrats pass a bill exonerating people from their contractual commitments, what about us who did the responsible thing and paid off our student debt, stuck to our bills, or maintained financial responsibility?

Kennedy from Kennedy Nation weighed saying, ‘I am not obligated to pay your student debt, and nor is the government. Your bad choices are not my problem. The end”

As first reported by the conservative Washington Examiner newspaper this morning, “As a member of Congress, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez makes a whopping $174,000 annually, meaning that she individually earns more than twice the average U.S. household’s income. Yet the progressive Democrat nonetheless thinks that working-class taxpayers should have to pay off her student loan debt.”

As one political pundit commented this morning when asked about what Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is demanding, “They should put her picture in the dictionary next to the word “chutzpah.”

Still, believe it or not, it’s true. AOC, as she’s known, wants American taxpayers to pay off her $17,000 in student loan debt.

Here’s what happened.

While giving a speech on the floor of the United States House of Representatives about student loans and the impact student loan debt has on young Americans, and calling for “student debt cancellation,” AOC stated:

“I’m 32 years old now. I have over $17,000 in student loan debt, and I didn’t go to graduate school because I knew that getting another degree would drown me in debt that I would never be able to surpass. This is unacceptable.”

What do you think?  Should American taxpayers – meaning you – pay off the student loans of AOC – or anyone else – making $174,000 a year? Why or why not? Would you favor low-income Americans having some amount of their student debt forgiven? Why or why not?
