(RepublicanWire.org) – When former President Donald Trump was in office, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador allegedly requested a pardon for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. On January 4, he evidently approached President Joe Biden to ask for the same. Although Obrador said he never received a response from the prior US leader, he hopes to receive one this time as a “sign of solidarity” with Mexico.

The Mexican president wants to give Assange the opportunity to reside in his country without fear because he doesn’t believe the Australian-born fugitive would be a threat.

In December, a United Kingdom court ruled in favor of Assange’s extradition to the United States to face 18 criminal counts of releasing classified Department of Defense material. The WikiLeaks founder is still in the UK, appealing the decision, while Obrador continues to offer him asylum.

However, the 50-year-old might have another card up his sleeve to avoid or lessen the approximately 175 years of jail time he’s facing in the US. Assange supposedly has information about previous American elections that could get him some leniency from the federal government.
