Can you imagine being taxed every time you go to the store? To work? On vacation? Well, family trips are about to become a lot more expensive if Joe Biden has his way. According to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, the Biden Administration is considering taxing everyday Americans for simple travel — even within their own communities — as a way to pay for a massive, $3 trillion infrastructure bill.
Biden plans to travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania next week to reveal the plan, which would “rebuild the infrastructure — both physical and technological infrastructure in this country — so that we can compete and create significant numbers of really good-paying jobs.” Biden says it is “frustrating” that past Presidents like Barack Obama and Bill Clinton have allowed our nation’s infrastructure to deteriorate, causing us to lag far behind China.
“When you think about infrastructure, it’s a classic example of the kind of investment that has a return on that investment. That’s one of many reasons why we think this is so important,” Buttigieg says. “This is a jobs vision as much as it is an infrastructure vision, a climate vision and more.”
Fixing our infrastructure is great, but Joe Biden wants to tax you for every single mile you drive. That’s right — even if you buy a vehicle with low gas mileage, an electric car, or a hybrid, Biden wants the federal government to be able to pick your pocket. Buttigieg says a mileage tax “shows a lot of promise if we believe in that so-called user-pays principle: The idea that part of how we pay for roads is you pay based on how much you drive.”
This plan wouldn’t just hurt everyday Americans. Truckers, Uber/Lyft drivers, and anyone whose job involves any driving at all will take a massive pay cut as they struggle to pay the extra taxes they incur just from going to work.
This plan is irresponsible and downright stupid, but that’s what we can expect from the Democrats, who constantly find new and interesting ways to squeeze whatever they can out of the little guy. It’s unclear if Biden’s scheme will be successful — but if it is, expect your family vacation (and your everyday life) to become a lot more expensive.
