(RepublicanWire.org) – Republican Sen. Ted Cruz sought to push through a plan to direct billions of federal dollars toward more police officers and mental health counselors in the nation’s schools, but was blocked by Democrats who criticized his move as grandstanding rather than a serious effort.

Cruz rose on the Senate floor mid-afternoon on Wednesday and described a prayer vigil he attended in Uvalde after the Robb Elementary School shooting that left 19 students and two teachers dead.

Grief-stricken residents wept openly as they mourned their losses, he recalled, adding that he has visited other Texas communities rocked by mass shootings over the years.

He alluded to a common pattern of alienated young men descending into mental illness over time before ultimately committing unspeakable crimes.

“If we had additional mental health resources on campuses, they would be in a position to spot the warning signs, to see the young man heading down that dangerous path and to intervene and stop them,” Cruz said.

Cruz said his bill would double the number of school resource officers, improve physical security of schools and triple a FEMA security grant program.

It also has $10 billion in grants for schools to hire mental health professionals.

Cruz cited numbers from the National Center for Education Statistics indicating many schools still lack adequate mental health funding.

His bill tracks with a proposal he offered earlier as an alternative to the bipartisan package ultimately approved by the Senate in the wake of the Uvalde massacre.

President Joe Biden signed into law the bipartisan package of mental health support, school safety funding and modest changes to the nation’s gun regulations.

Cruz voted against the bipartisan package, which was negotiated by his home state Republican colleague Sen. John Cornyn and Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn.

Cruz tried Wednesday to get his own bill passed through what is known as “unanimous consent,” in which legislation is deemed approved if no senator objects. He did the same with another bill that would allow schools to use some of their unspent coronavirus pandemic relief money on security measures.

Murphy stated simply “I object” on Cruz’s first bill, which prompted Cruz to say he was “genuinely flabbergasted” that Murphy would block his proposal without first debating its merits.

Cruz described the bipartisan bill Murphy and Cornyn wrote as a “big gun control package” that “will do nothing, zero, to stop mass murders” and predicted the country will see further such incidents.

“I pray that we don’t, but evil exists in the world and if another lunatic attacks a school and there’s not a police officer at the front door to stop him, remember right now, remember this moment when the Democrats said ‘no, we will not protect our kids,’” Cruz said.

Murphy also objected to Cruz’s bill to redirect unspent pandemic relief money and said he was indeed not interested in engaging in what he characterized as a Cruz bid for attention rather than an honest attempt to achieve anything.

“This isn’t real. This is a TV show. This is clickbait. This is theater,” Murphy said of Cruz. “This isn’t an actual attempt to pass legislation.”

Murphy said he recently was approached by another Republican senator, Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma, about the legislation in question. Murphy said he and Lankford are having serious discussions that stand in contrast to Cruz’s approach.

In an interview afterward, Cruz said he had no information about Murphy’s talks with Lankford and reiterated his criticism of Murphy for not engaging in substantive debate.

Asked about his rationale for excluding schools from mental health funding on the basis of their curriculum, Cruz said he would provide a written statement later.

In the statement, Cruz did not directly address why he would exclude some schools but noted Murphy did not raise objections to specific provisions in the bill and questioned why Murphy also blocked the other proposal to spend unused relief money on school security.

“The only reason Murphy and the Democrats blocked school safety measures today was because they were more interested in playing partisan games,” Cruz said.

Cruz’s actions come as advocates are pushing the Senate to pass a federal ban on certain semi-automatic firearms they describe as “assault weapons.”

Cornyn, who also opposes such a ban, has touted the benefits of the bipartisan package he helped shepherd into law.

In an interview Wednesday, Cornyn said he hadn’t studied the details of Cruz’s latest proposal but noted the package he already got enacted included significant resources for mental health and school security.

“I’m not sure more money on top of this is necessarily the answer,” Cornyn said.

(RepublicanWire.org) – Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer D-N.Y., and six other Democratic senators were spotted dining at Trattoria Alberto, a swanky Italian restaurant in Washington, on Monday evening, and the group was talking loud enough to be heard by other patrons, according to Punchbowl News. Schumer reportedly expressed confidence that Democrats would keep the Senate come November but said Republicans had a 60% chance of taking the House.

“During the dinner, Schumer let loose on a whole range of topics. Schumer spoke loudly, and his remarks were overheard by other patrons in the restaurant — and confirmed by multiple sources,” Punchbowl reported.

The other Democratic senators who were at dinner with Schumer when he made these comments were Delaware’s Chris Coons and Tom Carper, Arizona’s Mark Kelly, Maryland’s Chris Van Hollen, Colorado’s John Hickenlooper and Illinois’ Dick Durbin.

Schumer’s doubts about the Democratic majority in the House are a stark contrast to Pelosi’s own comments on Tuesday, in which she indicated a belief that Democrats will actually add to their House majority.

But Schumer’s comments at his Monday night dinner did not sound as confident as Pelosi’s speculation that Democrats will keep control of the House.

Punchbowl also reported on Schumer’s various other comments overheard at the dinner, regarding upcoming elections, as well as the current political landscape.

In regards to elections and political offices, the Schumer allegedly said that he believes former President Donald Trump will run again in 2024; Kevin McCarthy, the current House Minority Leader, “sucks up” to Trump; Democrats don’t look likely to win the Iowa Senate race; and Arizona’s Senate race will get more closely contested if Peter Thiel, a tech billionaire, decides to start pouring money into boosting Republican candidate Blake Masters.

On more current issues not directly related to the elections, Schumer also reportedly criticized Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia for saying that taxation was like “inflation” for wealthy Americans. Punchbowl reported that Schumer called that “ridiculous.”

Schumer also reportedly blamed former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for Democrats’ failure to gain more House seats during the redistricting in New York.

Though the overheard discussion reportedly covered a broad range of topics, it seemed to come at a crucial time in light of Pelosi’s comments and the status of congressional races throughout the country.

(RepublicanWire.org) – Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis makes good on sending Illegal Immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard, something he had suggested doing 9 months ago. Two planes just landed on the island filled with illegal immigrants.

Communications director for DeSantis, Taryn Fenske told Fox News, “Yes, Florida can confirm the two planes with illegal immigrants that arrived in Martha’s Vineyard today were part of the state’s relocation program to transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations.”

“States like Massachusetts, New York, and California will better facilitate the care of these individuals who they have invited into our country by incentivizing illegal immigration through their designation as ‘sanctuary states’ and support for the Biden Administration’s open border policies,” she said.

“As you may know, in this past legislative session the Florida Legislature appropriated $12 million to implement a program to facilitate the transport of illegal immigrants from this state consistent with federal law,” she added.

Last November dozens of flights filled with illegal immigrants landed in Florida sent by the Biden administration. This is what prompted DeSantis to offer to send illegals to Delaware on buses.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott started bussing illegal immigrants to Democrat ran Sanctuary cities such as Washington D.C., Chicago, and New York City. Arizona has also sent buses to Washington.

With $12 million in the Florida budget appropriated to relocate illegal immigrants, we expect to see more of this.

(RepublicanWire.org) – Special prosecutor John Durham is winding down his probe into the origin of the Trump Russia claims that rocked the country for years with no further charges according to media reports.

Durham could call another grand jury but according to the report, there are currently no plans to do so. Durham and his team are working on finishing a final report by the end of the year.

But Merrick garland will determine if it is released, in what form it is released, and what will be redacted so don’t expect much. In another sign Durham is wrapping it up, one of the lead prosecutors on his team is leaving for a job with a prominent law firm.

Durham and his team used a grand jury in Washington to indict Michael Sussmann, a prominent cybersecurity lawyer with ties to Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign.

Sussman was indicted last year on a charge of making a false statement to the FBI at a meeting in which he shared a tip about potential connections between computers associated with Trump and a Kremlin-linked Russian bank.

Sussmann was acquitted of that charge at trial in May.

A grand jury based in the Eastern District of Virginia last year indicted a Russia analyst who had worked with Christopher Steele, a former British spy who was the author of a dossier of rumors and unproven assertions about Trump.

The dossier played no role in the FBI’s decision to begin examining the ties between Russia and the Trump campaign. It was used in an application to obtain a warrant to surveil a Trump campaign associate.

The analyst, Igor Danchenko, who is accused of lying to federal investigators, goes on trial next month in Alexandria, Virginia.

In the third case, Durham’s team negotiated a plea deal with an FBI lawyer whom an inspector general had accused of doctoring an email used in preparation for a wiretap renewal application.

The plea deal resulted in no prison time.

Durham has one case outstanding. From Just the News:

In a bombshell revelation, Special Prosecutor John Durham revealed Tuesday in court filings that the FBI paid a Russian businessman as a confidential human source in the investigation of Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign even though it had prior concerns that businessman was tied to Moscow’s intelligence services.

Durham persuaded the federal judge in the upcoming trial of Igor Danchenko to unseal a motion revealing that Danchenko, the primary source of the now-discredited Steele dossier, was paid by the FBI as a confidential human source for more than three years until the fall of 2020 when he was terminated for lying to agents.

Danchenko is charged with five counts of lying to the bureau during that relationship and faces trial next month in federal court in the Virginia suburbs of Washington D.C.

(RepublicanWire.org) – On the 60th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s famous vow to put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s — President Biden re-announced his cancer “moonshot” goal to cut in half deaths from the related diseases by 2047.

Kennedy’s 1962 plan to put a man on the moon was accomplished within seven years.

“The goal is to cut cancer death rates by at least 50% — at least 50% in the next 25 years, to turn more cancers from death sentences into chronic diseases people can live with,” Biden said in a speech in Boston.

Biden sought to tie himself to Kennedy’s legacy and was even introduced by JFK’s daughter Caroline Kennedy, the current US ambassador to Australia.

The White House previously outlined a cancer “moonshot” vision in February, but re-upped the initiative to take advantage of publicity around the Kennedy speech’s anniversary.

“Today, I signed an executive order that directs the federal government to ensure biotechnologies invented in the United States of America are made in the United States of America,” said Biden.

Biden’s speech was full of gaffes and awkward moments.

At one point Joe Biden pointed to cancer patients sitting on the balcony and told them not to jump.

Joe Biden also mispronounced the name of the Director of the National Cancer Institute, Monica Bertagnolli: “Monica, you can call me Bid-in,” he said trying to recover from the gaffe.

In the end, Biden got lost and had no idea where to go after his speech.

Every time Biden speaks in public, it reveals that he is not well.

(RepublicanWire.org) – On Saturday a preview of her interview on the NBC show “Meet The Press” was shared and it included Kamala Harris’ swipe at what she said was an “activist court.”

“How much confidence do you have in the Supreme Court?” host Chuck Todd said to the vice president.

“I think this is an activist court,” she said.

“What does that mean?” the host said.

“It means that we had an established right for almost half a century, which is the right of women to make decisions about their own body as an extension of what we have decided to be, the privacy rights to which all people are entitled. And this court took that constitutional right away, and we are suffering as a nation because of it,” she said.

“That causes me great concern about the integrity of the court overall. Especially as someone who my life was inspired by people like Thurgood Marshall, and by the work on that court of Earl Warren to bring an unanimous court to pass Brown v. Board of Education,” the vice president said.

“This is the court that on once sat Earl Warren, Thurgood Marshall and Sandra Day O’Connor. It’s a very different court,” she said.

Turley, a George Washington University Law School professor, tore into Harris on his own blog.

“The fact that the Court overturned a long-standing precedent does not mean that it is an ‘activist court.’ As I have previously noted, justices take an oath to uphold the Constitution and to ‘faithfully and impartially’ interpret the law,” the professor said.

“It is bizarre to argue that they should vote for some interpretation of the Constitution that they believe is wrong and unfounded just to preserve precedent. If that view had prevailed in the past, Brown v. Board of Education would have upheld the racist precepts of ‘separate but equal’ in Plessy v. Ferguson. When it comes to fundamental rights, justices should faithfully interpret the Constitution.

“There may be a greater hold of precedent in statutory interpretations (since Congress can address erroneous or conflicting interpretations).

“However, in the interpretation of the Constitution, justices are fulfilling an oath to ‘support and defend the Constitution of the United States,’” he said.

“Stare decisis may protect the Court as an institution from public criticism, but that should not override the duty to correctly and faithfully interpret the Constitution.

“As I noted in my exchange with Professor Sepper, the liberal justices have shown the same willingness to overturn precedent when they have a majority or to create new doctrines with sweeping social and political implications.

“The left did not denounce the Warren Court when it was handing down such sweeping new rulings. It did not denounce Justice Breyer when he wrote routinely voted in dissent on death penalty cases despite decades of precedent supporting the right of states to impose capital punishment,” the legal scholar argued.

“There is little doubt that the liberals on the Court would overturn Heller and the Second Amendment cases if they had a majority. Indeed, while denouncing the ‘activist’ conservative justices for overturning cases, Democratic senators demanded that cases like Heller and Citizen’s United be overturned.

“During the confirmation hearing for Justice Kavanaugh, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) demanded that Kavanaugh promise to respect stare decisis on cases like Roe, but then called for overturning cases like Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission,” he said.

“Democratic groups often decry the conservative majority as ‘partisan’ while demanding the packing of the court to guarantee an immediate liberal majority.

“Justice Sonia Sotomayor has assured liberals in public speeches that ‘mistakes’ in such high-profile opinions can be ‘corrected’ by the Court in later decisions.

“In other words, when a majority forms with an opposing jurisprudential view. Does that make her an activist justice according to Vice President Harris?” he posited.

“Dean Erwin Chemerinsky celebrated that ‘Justice Sotomayor wrote a dissent, in which she said, ‘Trinity Lutheran v. Comer was wrong then, and it’s wrong now.” While that is a paraphrasing of the justice, does that mean that she has discarded the hold of precedent for politics? Of course not.

“She is interpreting the Constitution consistently and faithfully according to her own jurisprudential viewpoint.

“In the recent Carson opinion, Sotomayor makes clear that ‘this Court should not have started down this path’ in Trinity Lutheran and clearly rejects its hold on the Court. Not surprisingly, Chemerinsky approves of that position,” the law professor said.

“Yet, Chemerinsky denounced the conservative justices as ‘partisan hacks.’

“Hillary Clinton declared that she would only nominate justices who would overturn Citizen’s United. Would those justices then be ‘partisan hacks’?

“None of this means that Harris should not disagree with the Court or reject its reasoning. As Chief Justice Roberts said this weekend, that is fair game. Rather it is the attack on the integrity of the justices that is beyond the pale in my view,” he said.

U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has responded following increased criticism of the nation’s highest court, largely from Democrats.

“People can say what they want, but simply because people disagree with an opinion is not a basis for questioning the legitimacy of the court.

“If the court doesn’t retain its legitimate function of interpreting the Constitution, I’m not sure who would take up that mantle. You don’t want the political branches telling you what the law is, and you don’t want public opinion to be the guide about what the appropriate decision is,” Roberts told the audience.

Justice Roberts makes an important point, the political branches, Democrats and Republicans, should not have the power to tell us what laws mean.

(RepublicanWire.org) – Ted Cruz stepped in at the last minute and derailed a new Dem bill from moving forward. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) was not happy saying:

“I think the agreement that we had has been blown up,” Klobuchar said. “This bill is about protecting local journalism by leveling the playing field and allowing local news outlets to band together to negotiate for fair compensation from tech platforms.

“I am committed to targeted, bipartisan legislation to achieve this goal. Since news outlets depend on the antitrust exemption while the covered platforms do not, the platforms could then raise content moderations at the first opportunity in an attempt to avoid the joint negotiations.”

Klobuchar admitted defeat telling a GOP Senator, “Sen. Kennedy, we worked on this for months and we won’t be able to support the Cruz amendment here, so I’m hoping we can talk about this in the future. But if this is in it we can’t support the bill.”

Ted Cruz fired back saying his amendment would stop any possible censorship between big tech and the media (as we saw with Hunter Biden), which should be the goal of Congress when they pass laws, not fostering an environment where censorship can happen.

“It simply says the topic of discussion when the two sides get together can’t be censorship. It should be ad revenue, which is what all of this discussion of this markup has focused on,” Cruz said.

“Democrats would rather pull their bill entirely than advance it with my proposed protections for Americans from unfair online censorship,” Cruz said.

Cruz added, “What is preeminent to me is whether this bill is going to increase or decrease censorship.

“If you’re negotiating, you ought to be negotiating on the ostensible harm this bill is directed at, which is the inability to get revenues from your content.

“You should not be negotiating on content moderation and how you are going to censor substantive content.”

Supporters of a bill meant to give news organizations greater leverage against the giant tech companies were forced to temporarily withdraw the measure Thursday, raising new doubts about one of Congress’ prime efforts to check Silicon Valley’s power.

Two hours into its Thursday markup, Republicans inserted provisions designed to limit the platforms’ abilities to moderate content, over the objections of lead sponsor Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), who then withdrew the bill. She said she fully plans to move the bill forward in a bipartisan way.

(RepublicanWire.org) – Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Thursday admitted that Joe Biden’s ‘Inflation Reduction Act’ is actually the Green New Deal repackaged.

Yellen said Biden’s Marxist spending bill will “rid ourselves” of oil and gas.

“The Inflation Reduction Act will put us on our way toward a future where we depend on the wind, the sun and other clean sources of energy. We will rid ourselves from our dependence on fossil fuels,” Yellen said.

The Biden Regime believes California is “in the lead” on energy.

Jennifer Granholm on Tuesday said California is “in the lead” on energy and can “show the rest of the nation how it is done.”

This is the same state that is failing to meet its current energy needs, even asking residents to refrain from charging electric vehicles.

This is after California banned gas-powered car sales starting in 2035.

California’s Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom is also begging people to turn off their lights and not use appliances to avoid power outages amid soaring temps.

(RepublicanWire.org) – Dem politicians in Illinois committed political suicide in a late-night vote and will eliminate cash bail after the new year. Dem politicians like Lori Lightfoot, Kim Foxx, and J.B. Pritzker do not get the benefit of the doubt after their lax policies led to a surge in violent crime in Chicago, with most of the crimes committed by repeat offenders who should have been locked up.

In one famous case, Kim Foxx refused to charge anyone after a gun battle erupted in the streets of the city. She said they were mutual combatants so she couldn’t charge anyone. Carjackings are up, the citizens of Chicago are hiring private security to police their own neighborhoods and they want to double down on the radical policies?

Patrick Windhorst, former state’s attorney and current state representative for district 118, said: “I believe the elimination of cash bail, particularly as it’s written in the SAFE-T Act, will reduce public safety and lead to more crime particularly more violent crime in Illinois.

“I know that talking with prosecutors and law enforcement officers, they’re really concerned that the public is going to point the finger at them and say, ‘Why aren’t you doing more about these offenses?’

“And with this major change in the law, beginning January 1st, a lot of their ability to do their jobs has been restrained.

“So there are a whole list of violent crimes, burglary, robbery, arson, kidnapping, almost all drug offenses even drug distribution, DUI offenses, even DUI offenses that are involving a fatality, that do not qualify for detention under the Illinois Safety Act.

“To me, that’s going to mean a lot of individuals are committing crimes and being released immediately, if not within a couple of days,” he said.

Johnson County Sheriff Peter Sopczak said: “Anyone sitting in jail right now with all these pending charges, they’re going to be let out.

“The gates are open and they’re going to be let out onto the streets.”

“So it’s really taking the hands out of the police arresting people.

“We’re going to end up calling someone saying, ‘Can we arrest them?’

“Just because of liability if you take someone into custody and it doesn’t meet all the criteria, well, then you can get in trouble.”

DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin said:

“Yeah, they did change the law.

“And when a police officer can use deadly force under the new law, officers now have to evaluate each situation in light of the totality of the circumstances.

“In each case, which includes proximity in time to the use of force, to the commission of a force of a felony, and the reasonable feasibility of safely apprehending the subject at a later time.

“So in any emergency situation, a split second decision, an officer has to be thinking, am I able to reasonably apprehend this person at a later date?”

James Murphy III, a former office manager for Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx, criticized the SAFE-T Act, in his blistering resignation letter.

He wrote:

“I have been thinking about leaving for a while now. Really, the thoughts began back in January of 2021, when the ‘SAFE-T Act’ was passed.

“Seeing this administration’s involvement in that process was an eye-opening experience for me. To be clear, I am in support of eliminating cash bail – no person should sit in jail solely because they can’t afford to pay for bail.

“But I never understood the rush on an issue that was so important. I voiced my concerns at the time. And it was in that process that I began to realize that the administration’s ‘Mission Vision and Values’ was just a PR stunt, just words on a page.

“Fairness. Accountability. Integrity. Respect. Collaboration.

“Those words should mean something. They do to me. And I know that they do to you as well. Yet time after time after time this administration has shown that they don’t live the meaning of those words. Or they don’t care,” he said.

(RepublicanWire.org) – A federal judge, Terry Doughty, handed a pair of Republican AGs a big win over the Biden Administration. Doughty rejected Joe’s arguments and told the Biden administration it has 21 days to turn over emails sent by White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and Anthony Fauci to social media platforms regarding misinformation.

Missouri AG Eric Schmitt and Louisiana AG Jeff Landry brought the case. “This Court believes Plaintiffs are entitled to external communications by Jean-Pierre and Dr. Fauci in their capacities as White House Press Secretary and Chief Medical Advisor to the President to third-party social media platforms,” Doughty said in the ruling.

In their initial filing, the AGs argued that “having threatened and cajoled social-media platforms for years to censor viewpoints and speakers disfavored by the Left, senior government officials in the Executive Branch have moved into a phase of open collusion with social-media platforms under the Orwellian guise of halting so-called ‘disinformation,’ ‘misinformation,’ and ‘malinformation’.”

“As a result of these actions, there has been an unprecedented rise of censorship and suppression of free speech – including core political speech – on social media platforms,” the lawsuit said.

“Not just fringe views, but perfectly legitimate, responsible viewpoints and speakers have been unlawfully and unconstitutionally threatened in the modern public square.”

Schmitt said:

“In our lawsuit against the Biden Admin for colluding with social media companies to censor speech, the Court just ordered DOJ to produce records from key WH & HHS officials like Dr. Fauci, the WH Press Secretary, and others.”

A Biden admin official told Fox News:

“As we have said over and over again since the beginning of the administration in our battle against COVID-19, it has been critical for the American people to have access to factual, accurate, science-based information.

“For example, we worked hard to debunk inaccurate or misleading information about the COVID vaccines that have saved millions of lives and encourage Americans to get vaccinated and boosted to stay safe.

“Democrats and Republicans came together to urge the public to get vaccinated, stressing the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines.”

“We believe in and we support freedom of speech, and we also believe it is important for all media platforms, including social media, to represent factual scientific information and combat misinformation and disinformation that can cost lives,” the official said.
