(RepublicanWire.org) – A new poll paints the US as a fractured country – split along the political divide, pessimistic about the economy and fearful our system of government itself is under threat.
Last week, NBC News ran a major poll of 1,000 American adults to find out what they think about where we are and where we’re heading – the results make grim reading. The top answers when asked to describe the state of the nation, were “downhill,” “divisive,” “negative,” “struggling,” “lost” and “bad.” And, as well as thinking things are bad right now, a majority don’t see them getting any better.
NBC found 72% of respondents think the US is headed in the wrong direction, while 61% say their real income is falling as the cost of living soars. Meanwhile, 70% believe political polarization has become so bad the country can no longer solve the major issues it faces. The last time this question was asked, in 2010, 50% believed the country would always come together in a crisis; now the figure is just 27%. Maybe worst of all, no less than 76% believe democracy and the majority rule are in danger.
NBC says this is only the sixth time ever Americans have been so pessimistic in back-to-back polls. Three of those times – 1992, 2008 and 2016 – fell in election years; at each of those elections, it ended badly for the governing party. With less than 10 months to go until the midterms, it’s not looking good for the Democrats.
